Sharon Greer acts as a scribe for ‘Shirl’ and does an admirable task.
Shirl’s story is one of trial, tribulation and glorious reliance on God to deliver. Time after time He comes through, in spite of Shirl. She is not always anxious to do His will, but when you tell God, “Use me in whatever way you wish”, you may be led down paths not of your choosing.
This is a story of struggle, redemption and, finally, glorification. We follow Shirl through the many ups and downs of her life.
At first when I began reading this book, I thought, oh no, not another one of those sweet stories telling us that once you give your life to God everything will be alright and you’ll live happily ever after. But the further I got into it, the more real it became. Life is not a bed of roses just because you give your life to God. No, it often becomes more of a struggle as we seek to align our earthly and sometimes selfish will with God’s will. We fail, we rant, we suffer because of our wills, but God doesn’t fail, He calms, He blesses when we let go of our wills and choose Him. That message comes through loud and clear. Although we will go experience trials, He is there to go through them with us.
I feel very blessed to have read about “Shirl’s” life. It is not one I would choose. It is not one God has asked of me, but I hope that if He ever does, I can have the same abiding trust she had.
