A Memoir
Thomas Nelson, Publisher
When Carolyn Drake departed London, Ontario for London, England to begin her scholarship year at Oxford she knew her life would be different. What she did not expect to find was a purpose in life and an encompassing joy wrapped in boundless grace. Surprised by Oxford is the story of her journey. Carolyn has graciously invited us to travel that journey with her. Through her eyes and heart we learn of the doubts, the difficulties and the trials which accompanied her journey till at the end we, too, can be surprised by Oxford.
While this is not an easy book to read it is well worth the effort. Weber, a PhD in Literature, causes us to stop and think about our own journeys. The challenges she faced are in many ways our challenges and the victories she experienced can become our victories as well.
It may be wise to have a dictionary at hand when reading this scholarly work, but it will be well worth the effort and time. It is easy to understand why this book won the 2014 Grace Irwin Award as the year’s most outstanding book at The Word Awards Gala.
