Martin Crosbie
My Temporary Life: Book I of the My Temporary Life trilogy
Malcolm Wilson has a rough life in Kilmarnok, Scotland: a mother in Vancouver whom he sees only in the summer, a father who doesn’t seem to care anymore, school bullies and cruel school masters. The only person who stands by him is his alcoholic friend, Hardly. But Hardly has his own problems.
The story, told in the first person, present tense, is an intriguing one. The incidents recounted from Malcolm’s youth are very believable. Crosbie’s story-telling makes those incidents come alive. We cringe at the beatings the boys receive and we rejoice with them when they mange to best their tormentors.
The second part of the book I found somewhat less believable. Although each incident is plausible in and of itself, I had a hard time believing that all those things could happen with such good outcomes for one person. Having said that, the story still was still rivetting and held my attention.
I would recommend this book.
