I watched as the chunks of melting snow warmed by the winter sun slid down the metal roof. Some went quickly seeming to welcome the release. Some slid slowly, reluctant to take the plunge, but one by one each piece in turn tumbled over the edge and unto the pile of snow beneath.
All that is, but one. It clung tenaciously to the edge of the roof part of it already suspended over the void but still refusing to let go.
“Is that me?” I mused. “Am I that chunk that doesn’t want to let go?”
God calls each of us to a task. Sometimes it means venturing into the unknown. Some people seem to have no qualms about rushing headlong to answer God’s call. They are ready, even eager, to plunge into that unknown trusting that there is Someone to receive them.
Others are more reluctant but go they do.
And then there are those who cling for all they’re worth to the known, the familiar. They resist change with all of their fibre. They are afraid to venture out, afraid of what might be.
Eventually the tenacious chunk lost it’s grip. It joined the rest of the snow and crashed to the heap below.
I admit, change can be scary. But isn’t it wonderful to know that when our God calls He promises to be there to make the landing safe, possible even soft and always rewarding. All I need to do is trust and let go.
Help me, Lord, to do just that.
